Rumination is a covert but powerful process that maintains obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and contributes to emotional distress, particularly depressed mood. In this webinar, rumination is conceptualized as a mental compulsion rather than a purely obsessional process. Drawing on cognitive-behavioural models of OCD and transdiagnostic research on rumination, this webinar will help clinicians identify, assess, and target rumination in clinical practice. Concrete cognitive-behavioural strategies (including psychoeducation, habit reversal, response prevention, behavioural experiments, behavioural activation, grounding, stimulus control, and relapse prevention) will be discussed to help interrupt ruminative habits and support symptom reduction.
Dr. Jean-Philippe Gagné is a clinical psychologist and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at l’Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). His work focuses on cognitive-behavioural models and interventions for anxiety disorders and related conditions (e.g., obsessive-compulsive disorder), with particular interest in rumination, uncertainty, control, and exposure-based treatments. He is actively involved in research, teaching, clinical training, and knowledge translation, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Association of Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies (CACBT), where he contributes to francophone initiatives and professional development.
