Webinar Description

Rumination is a covert but powerful process that maintains obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and contributes to emotional distress, particularly depressed mood. In this webinar, rumination is conceptualized as a mental compulsion rather than a purely obsessional process. Drawing on cognitive-behavioural models of OCD and transdiagnostic research on rumination, this webinar will help clinicians identify, assess, and target rumination in clinical practice. Concrete cognitive-behavioural strategies (including psychoeducation, habit reversal, response prevention, behavioural experiments, behavioural activation, grounding, stimulus control, and relapse prevention) will be discussed to help interrupt ruminative habits and support symptom reduction.

Learning Objectives

  1. Conceptualize rumination as a covert compulsion and understand its role in the maintenance of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and associated mood difficulties.
  2. Integrate rumination into cognitive-behavioural case formulations for OCD to refine assessment and treatment planning.
  3. Apply cognitive-behavioural strategies to identify, interrupt, and reduce rumination during and between sessions (e.g., habit reversal, response prevention, stimulus control, behavioural activation, behavioural experiments, grounding).
